The 4 Train to October: the 161 St – Yankee Stadium magnet

Every October run in the Bronx starts the same way: on the 4 train, uptown, watching the platform signs count up until one of them says Yankee Stadium. That sign is the piece. We scaled it down, gave it a magnet, and made it the second object in our subway-sign series.

THE OBJECT

The 161 Street – Yankee Stadium Station magnet is a faithful homage to the platform sign: the white stripe across the top, the Helvetica, the green 4, the orange B and D for the Sunday crowd. The lettering and bullets are raised, printed in true MTA colors, hand-finished in our studio, and backed with a neodymium magnet strong enough to hold a stack of tickets to the fridge.

It’s the same format as the KN1CKS · Madison Square Garden magnet from June: 7.48” × 1.84”, multi-color PLA, matte finish. Same sign, different station, different October.

HOW THIS EDITION WORKS

We didn't want to put a number on this one before the season decided what it was, so the edition is built around the run itself. So far the run is going fine: Boston came to the Bronx for the Wild Card Series and left two nights later, 9–0 and 9–2. The Division Series against Tampa Bay starts Saturday.

Every magnet is numbered in the order it's bought. The window stays open as long as the Yankees are playing. The night the season ends, whether that's next week or the last week of October, it closes for good, and the number sold becomes the edition size. No restock, no reprint.

If they go out early, you own one of a very small run marking the year they swept Boston out of October. If they go the distance, this edition will have been open all month and your number says how early you got on the train.

luis aguilera

Luis Aguilera was born Caracas, Venezuela and then moved to Miami, Florida as a teenager. A street artist by nature, Aguilera has always been intrigued by the innovative ways that photography can capture a moment, especially shots near water. With the use of various DJI drones, Aguilera has been able to capture moments that were only available to those who had access to a helicopter. With his drone photography, Aguilera has been able to capture stunning photos of the oceans in different parts of the world. His series, “Thalassophile”, which means lover of the oceans, has explored the beaches of Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale in Florida as well as Ocho Rios, Jamaica. He’s also captured the exotic beaches in Waipo’o Valley, Waimea Beach, and Two Step in Hawaii. Mesmerized by the beachside scene and its ocean-adjacent atmosphere, this series focuses on the immensity and power of the ocean and how small people are in comparison. Capturing moments that feel authentic and true to the experience of being by the ocean, Aguilera’s series shows how no matter how different humans are, we are all captured the same 400 ft. in the air. The series also highlights how all people end up doing the same things when they see and interact with the water – whether that is sun bathing, lying in an inflatable tube, or enjoying the weather with friends, drinks and some food. The collectiveness of the aerial shots emphasize how people not only react to the ocean in similar ways, they also all love to do the same things at the beach. As Aguilera continues to focus on his drone photography and his “Thalassophile” series, he is looking to explore other regions as well. His next photos will be of the tulip fields and city of Amsterdam, Holland. He will also continue to explore the sands of Miami Beach and this summer the Caribbean beaches of the Dominican Republic.
